Career Stepping Stones Beyond the Classroom Career Stepping Stones Beyond the Classroom A competitive employment market for engineers together with shifting business strategies and corporate cultures is shattering the notion that academic success is the sole pathway to career opportunity. While good grades in college still matter, many employers in the technology field are seeking engineers who have broadened their skills and experiences outside the traditional classroom and into volunteer work, design teams, and other types of extracurricular pursuits. Design teams in particular allow students strong exposure to the interdisciplinary aspect of engineering and valuable experience in teamwork, communication, and project management. Business employers today are attracted to well-rounded job candidates who demonstrate interest and achievement beyond the normal expectations of coursework and labs, notes Paul Stevenson, an ASME member in the Florida West Coast Section and vice president at McCormick Stevenson, an engineering consultancy located in Clearwater.Paul Stevenson Stevenson, senior vice president of the Societys Student and Early Career Sector, twice a year visits area colleges to impart career advice and guidance, never failing to extol the benefits and value of networking, soft skills development, and active participation in professional societies. Among these professional societies, ASME has provided solid opportunities for students and early career engineers to enhance their skills and grow their knowledge and experience. The Societys popular outreach programs include the Human Powered Vehicle Competition, Student Design Competition, IShow, and technical presentations and poster sessions at various conferences. This year ASME will roll out an ambitious new program E-Fests. Engineering Festivals E-Fests will consolidate several of ASMEs design competitions, while aiming to connect students and early-career engineers to thoug ht leaders and practicing engineers to receive practical and valuable career guidance. E-Fests are built on an engineering festivals model, incorporating many programs and activities in one place. Stevenson is on the ASME team that planned and developed the business model for E-Fests, and was a champion for the program when it was only a concept more than two years ago. According to Stevenson, the program components of E-Fests strongly align attendees with the interests and marketing goals of todays high-tech corporate enterprise. For example, the E-Fests programs will include hackathons, in which students can exercise computer skills and abilities that are viewed as assets to government agencies, transit system operators, and companies seeking new product innovation. Challenged to verstndigung im strafverfahren with the unprecedented rate of change brought by the increasingly digitized economy, companies across all industry sectors are recruiting engineers with aptit ude in programming, coding, and hardware applications. The emerging data-driven economy is putting a premium on engineers who can write and analyze sophisticated computer code and also develop algorithms enabling companies to successfully manage supply chains, internal operations, product development timetables, and other important business functions, said Stevenson. Another emerging industry trend, according to Stevenson, is additive manufacturing, which will receive strong exposure at E-Fests via the popular IAM3D Competition. There are many unmet needs in the additive manufacturing space, particularly in the area of materials characterization, noted Stevenson, who as a consultant to the aerospace industry has seen the ability of manufacturers to design and fabricate quality parts on 3D printers. Young engineers giving presentations in the IAM3D Competition at E-Fests will find themselves in a position to market their talents to firms seeking new ideas and new conce pts.Student competitors gather at the University of Arkansas. Multidisciplinary Engineering At E-Fests, participants in the IAM3D Competition will share the stage with design teams in the Human Powered Vehicle Competition, bringing together creators of simulation tools and 3D printers with designers of control mechanisms and aerodynamic systems in a multidisciplinary forum of information exchange and knowledge sharing. According to Stevenson, E-Fests blur the lines between engineering disciplines, promoting an environment in which young engineers of diverse talents and interests can connect, collaborate, and learn. When they enter the business world, young engineers will see that companies place value on teamwork and communication, said Stevenson. In todays engineering design environment, no product is the creation of one individual. To tackle the complex technology challenges of the 21st century, engineers will need help they will need to work on discipline-diverse teams. In his visits to local colleges, Stevenson impresses upon engineering students to learn as much as possible about project management. Skills in project management as well as involvement on design teams convey to business employers that a student has a foundation in team-based problem solving and communication, said Stevenson. He believes E-Fests will assist post-secondary students and early career engineers in finding ways to develop the skills to render them more marketable in todays competitive and multidisciplinary workplace. A central mission of E-Fests is to prepare young engineers to be valuable members of a changing technology workforce and to play a role in helping companies solve the complex challenges facing the world, said Stevenson.

What does perfect timing mean to you?Dan PinkWe make most of our when decisions based on intuition, guesswork, and default. Thats a mistake. Across more than a dozen fields - economics, social psychology, endocrinology, chronobiology, cognitive science, and more - researchers are uncovering a huge batch of exciting evidence that allows us to make systematically better when decisions. Using that evidence wont deliver perfect timing all the time, but we can at least make smarter, better choices.Brit +CoA big part of your premise on perfect timing revolves around an idea of three distinct parts of a day - the peak, trough, and recovery. Can you walk us through unterstellung stages?DPMost of us progress through the day in three stages A peak, a trough, and a recovery. And about 80% of us move through the day in that order. But the exception - and its a hugely important one - are people with evening chronotypes. These night owls naturally wake up late and go to sleep late. Theyre much more complicated. But the key thing to know is that they reach their peak late in the afternoon and through the evening.During the peak, which for most of us is early in the day but for owls is the evening, were highest in vigilance. That makes it the best time for analytic tasks, those that require heads-down focus and attention. During the trough, which for almost everyone is early to mid-afternoon, were better off doing mundane administrative tasks - the sorts of things that dont require massive brainpower and creativity. And during the recovery, which for most of us is the late afternoon and early evening, our vigilance is lower but our mood is higher - which makes it a good time for creative, iterative, insight tasks.B+C So, were most focused in the mornings for detail-oriented tasks and loose in the afternoons for creative endeavor s - so what should we be working on during our trough periods?DPIts difficult. The trough is a really tough time of time. Theres all sorts of evidence - in hospitals, in schools, and in the corporate boardroom - showing that performance can decline considerably during this period. So the best strategy is twofold. First, where possible, dont do your most important work during this period. Instead, do work like answering routine schmelzglas - which we have to do, but that doesnt demand our full mental acuity. Second, take regular breaks - especially breaks with other people and where youre moving rather than stationary and outside rather than inside.B+C What about meetings and kollektiv-related projects? When do you recommend we schedule these during the workday?DPIt depends. Unfortunately, the only criterion most organizations now use for scheduling meetings is availability. Is there time on peoples calendar and is a conference room available? But scheduling meetings should be a strategicissue. We need to ask two key questions. First, what kind of meeting is this? Do we want people to be locked-down and analytic? Freewheeling and creative? Or is the meeting merely about an administrative issue? Second, whos at the meeting? Are the participants larks, owls, or in between? Once we have a sense of the type of people involved and the sorts of tasks to be done, we can make better choices about scheduling.B+C Are there things we can consciously work on to either help enhance our productivity or switch our mindset/workflow?DPYes. For most of us, the morning peak is good foranalytictasks - but late in the afternoon and early in the evening are better forinsighttasks. So the key is to do the right work at the right time. However, if were forced to do analytic work at a non-optimal time, several techniques can help. Of course, take regular breaks, as I mentioned earlier. But also consider using checklists to ensure that you do the right things in the right ways and that nothing falls through the cracks. And, if possible, check your work during your peak the next day to prevent slip-ups and mistakes.B+C Any advice do you have for those of us feeling burnout or overworked but cant necessarily take time off. How can we use timing to our advantage to feel better in our current circumstance?DPTwo suggestions. First, once again, breaks are part of the answer. But in this case, theres some really interesting research about micro-breaks - breaks that are extremely short. Even one-minute or two-minute breaks can help. One of my favorites is called 20-20-20. Its simple and very effective for those of us who sit at computers all day. Every 20 minutes look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. My second suggestion Ask yourself why youre doing the work in the first place? How, if at all, does it make a difference in the world? Or how does it simply contribute to a project or a team or another person? Purpose can be restorative.B+C It feels like we oft en try to cram in as much as we possibly can during a workday, but as you mentioned, that can backfire, leading to mistakes, burnout, and mental fatigue. Do you have any tips for us to keep us productive while keeping our sanity?DPHere are some general dos and dontsDo first things first and second things not at all. Thats a line from Peter Drucker and I try to live by it. One antidote to feeling crammed and overwhelmed is being smart whatnotto do. The only way to make good decisions about where to direct our attention is to be strategic about what to ignore.Dont be obsessive about metrics. Metrics and targets - whether related to time or to other topics - can often diminish performance in the long run by eroding morale, encouraging the gaming of the system, and even hurting customers.Do aim for control and challenge. The best jobs are those that combine challenge and control. Jobs in which people have control but no challenge are boring. Jobs in which we have challenge but no cont rol burn us out.
